The San Antonio Wheelmen are selecting and awarding a “Bike Friendly Establishment” once a quarter and the Starbucks in Leon Springs was first business to receive a “Bike Friendly establishment award" by the SA Wheelmen on Sunday April 6th.

The San Antonio club members voted that Starbucks deserved special recognition for “going the extra mile” to make cyclists feel welcome and of course providing “excellent coffee and cakes”.

“We thought we should really highlight and praise folks that really go the extra mile to make us feel welcome” said JD Simpson President of the San Antonio Wheelmen. Pictured is the Community Relations person at the SA Wheelmen (Fergus N) giving the award to Christine with Starbucks, Leon Springs.

Cyclists in growing numbers are discovering the roads in around San Antonio. A conservative estimate is that around 25-30000 cyclist are now contributing to local economies in and outside the San Antonio city limits. Not only is cycling regarded to be one of the healthiest low impact sports it also contributes significantly to the local economy. Many large cities in the US have been quick to exploit this trend and some of the surrounding communities such as Fredricksburg and Kerrville cater for cyclist hoping to attract extra tourism to the region. Bike shops, sportswear outlets, coffee shops, hotels and nutritional supplements stores are all benefactors to name but a few.

We look forward to seeing more bike friendly businesses out there, way to go Starbucks!
